A worrying concern has been highlighted in a report from the Irish Independent of January 26th, 2024 – Ireland convicted in EU court over unsafe drinking water tainted by chemical linked to cancer.
The concentration of THM’s, (a chemical compound created by the use of chlorine in water treatment plants) in Irish drinking water exceeds European Union safety levels, according to a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The ruling claims that the chemical compounds trihalomethanes, known as THMs, found in some Irish drinking water supplies, are at an unsafe level. THMs are chemical compounds that form when organic particles such as bacteria and other plant material remaining in water after filtering in water treatment plants reacts with chlorine disinfectant.
“THMs are of concern for human health and the environment since long-term exposure to high levels of these chemical compounds in drinking water may pose risks such as cancer risks, in particular bladder cancer and colon cancer, and cause gastrointestinal problems and skin irritation,” the court said it its ruling.
